City Comptroller John Liu and members of the Sikh community are calling on the city to reform New York Police Department dress-code policies that prohibit Sikh officers from wearing turbans and beards. They pointed to Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department, which recently amended its policy to allow employees to wear religious garb at work.

Young men are used to getting their hair shaped up at barbershops in New York City. Now, thanks to Colin Rodney and his Barbers for Obama, they can get their voting status shaped up, too. Rodney and owners of 20 barbershops in Brooklyn and Harlem are helping people register to vote in their shops in time for the Nov. 6 presidential election.

Joel Stones, the owner of the East Village Brazilian music store Tropicalia in Furs, grew up listening to Tim Maia.
“Do you remember the first time you grabbed a baby bottle?” he asks rhetorically. “I can’t remember the first time I heard Tim Maia.”
That’s because back home in Stones’ native Brazil, Maia, who died onstage in 1998 at age 55, is a legendary figure, both for his pioneering music style — a Brazilian take on American soul, or Brazilian soul — and his personal adventures and excesses.
