Manhattan —

The annual ING New York City Marathon returns resumes a year after being  washed out by Superstorm Sandy and six months after the Boston Marathon tragedy. The New York Road Runners, with the NYPD, poured unprecedented money and hours into securing the 26.2-mile course through the five boroughs. With 48,000 runners expected to participate and more than 2 million spectators cheering them on, security will be tight.
