Musicians using Instagram Live as their stage as they try to maintain contact with fans are finding that communication is just a small part of the challenge.

The bigger issue: Instagram doesn’t pay the bills and it lacks the exhilaration of live feedback from an audience.

For Emely Martinez, who performs as Emelia Vero, it’s been a rough transition. She often had been playing multiple gigs and frequently performed on the subway. Now she’s staying home, venturing out only for short walks in her Hunts Point neighborhood.

Martinez, like many musicians, has turned to using her home as a makeshift studio, creating a “quarantine album” to mark this time.
