President Joe Biden has promised to reverse the Trump administration’s loosening of federal wetlands protections but conservationists remain worried about the long-term effects.

Restrictions imposed near wetlands—which provide habitats to multiple species, improve water quality and assist with flood protections—limit development and farming operations.

“We rely on federal protection and our water quality certification review to protect smaller wetlands,” the state Department of Environmental Conservation says.
