Two years ago, Marine Staff Sgt. Eric Guendner, then 34, was caught in an ambush while deployed in Afghanistan. A small arms round hit him in the knee.

“Basically, it felt like someone hit me with a baseball bat,” he said.

The bullets shattered his femur — and his career in the military. Yet he refuses to feel sorry for himself. On Saturday, Guendner and 55 others braved chilly waters to compete in the First Annual Veterans Day 5K Charity Open Water Swim off Coney Island. The event raised money for the Service Women’s Action Network and the Wounded Warriors Project.
