Five high-profile New York prisoners convicted of crimes including murder and attempted murder are among the incarcerated men now seeking release.

Ranging in age from 48 to 61, they committed their first crimes as teens. Each has sought to express remorse. “You’ve got to say ‘I’m sorry’ in the way that you live,” one says.

A team of students from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY—Stephanie Chukwuma, Trone Dowd, Jeffery Harrell, Brenda León, Hannah Miller, Rosemary Misdary, Rachel Rippetoe, Maria Robins-Somerville, Sean Sanders and Annie Todd—interviewed them and examined their records.
