Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan is starting to show its age—10 years in the backbreaking world of ballet can be a lifetime.

To some dancers, the movie starring Natalie Portman is a time capsule from an ancient age, when misogyny and sexual exploitation went unchecked.

But beneath its feverish theatrics, 2010’s Black Swan reflects an uncomfortable reality that is all too current, one that surfaced publicly in a New York City Ballet scandal years later.
