More New Yorkers are seeing more injured birds during their pandemic days—and reporting in to the groups that try to help them recover.

“We definitely got more than we usually do,” says Tristan Higgenbotham, a wildlife rehabilitator at the Wild Bird Fund, whose D-bird database records reports. “This is the most we’ve ever gotten, and also the record number of intakes.”

Hundreds of thousands of birds fly into windows in the city every year. As many as 230,000 die.

“People assume that this is just like a skyscraper issue in New York City…” says Molly Adams, NYC Audubon’s Advocacy and Outreach manager. “But around 50 percent of collisions happen on single-family homes in the suburbs.”
