Use This Tool for SNAP at Farmers' Markets

Seasonal farmers’ markets are beginning to pop again throughout all five boroughs now that the weather is getting warmer.

Many markets feature vendors who accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments. The tool at the end of this story shows where SNAP benefits can be used, by borough, and when the markets operate.

Nearly 1.7 million New Yorkers receive SNAP benefits, a number that has increased amid the pandemic.

During the winter, it can be harder to find affordable local produce. The opening of seasonal farmers’ markets, green markets, and farm stands bring many more opportunities. Ten seasonal markets open in May and dozens more will follow this summer. They join more than 30 year-round markets.

SNAP sales at GrowNYC markets increased by 50% in 2020.

Many markets, like those operated by GrowNYC, accept SNAP benefits from shoppers.

The Trump administration’s Families First Coronavirus Response Act made it easier for families to apply for SNAP benefits while also allowing states to increase the amount allocated to recipients.

The Biden administration’s recently passed American Rescue Plan will continue the SNAP extension until September 2021, which includes a 15% increase in the maximum SNAP benefits.

Market organizers also participate in programs that help SNAP recipients stretch their benefits further. Funded by city Human Resources Administration and in partnership with the New York City Council, GrowNYC distributes Health Bucks to SNAP shoppers.  The program provides two additional dollars directly to SNAP shoppers for each $2 of SNAP benefits they spend, up to $10 per visit.
