This year’s Met Gala reignited debate about workforce abuse in the fashion industry.
Model Alliance, an advocacy organization, is proposing New York State legislation aimed at making management companies for models, stylists and makeup artists more accountable.
Models and others in the industry are often hired as independent contractors, a category that falls outside the reach of many labor laws.
The Fashion Workers Act would require companies to register with the Department of Labor and would add protections such as paying models within 45 days.
