Before COVID-19, Flushing’s largest food pantry fed fewer than 1,000 families per week.
Now, La Jornada feeds 10,000.
Even with an increase in donations and government assistance, the organization has sometimes had to turn people away in recent weeks.
“The days when the people finish, great, we’re all happy,” said Pedro Rodriguez, La Jornada’s founder and executive director. “The days when the food finishes first are hard.”
