Sitting on her bed in Woodhull Medical Center’s Post Partum Unit, Ranilane Flores held a photo of her newborn son, Aiden, and smiled.

“It is the first picture, besides being on a BlackBerry,” Ms. Flores said of the photo, which one of the ward’s photographers had taken for her as a gift. “The first professional picture.”

Every week, seven photographers make the rounds in Woodhull’s Post Partum Unit. With quick snaps of the shutter, they immortalize the first moments shared between mothers and their newborn babies. But instead of paychecks for their work, Woodhull rewards them with credits for medical care.
